The Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, Purulia was established in the year 1958 with the object of giving a practical and concrete shape to some of the educational ideas of Swami Vivekananda. Education, in order to be effective and fruitful, must be man-making, that is, it must bring about total and integrated development of the personality of the educand. This can be achieved only when the student is brought up in surroundings where body, mind and spirit can be looked after to effloresce in a congenial environment. In this context Swami Vivekananda prescribed a meaningful system of education. The Vidyapith has adopted this system suited and adapted to modern conditions of life. Swami Hiranmayanandaji Maharaj was the founder Secretary of this institution.
Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, Purulia with a history of over 67 years in educational sphere has achieved a top tier status among the premier educational institutions upto Higher Secondary level. Besides being an educational institution Purulia Vidyapith also works for the poor and downtrodden people of Purulia district through its various associated organizations and people in general. Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith, Purulia has planned to expand its activity beyond formal education to technical education by establishing an Agriculture College for the resource poor farmers of this drought prone Red & laterite tract of West Bengal covering the entire Jangalmahal.
The Vidyapith being a time-tested institution, it is possible to give proper stress on leadership training and prepare the students to grow into empathetic enlightened citizens for a democratic society.
